Futile Gesture RI Legislature

Last week Rhode Island’s Democrat legislators acted in desperation, proving to their constituents that they can make a useless gesture to demonstrate that they care.

On May 24, 2022, a deranged young man in Uvalde, Texas murdered two teachers and nineteen children and wounded seventeen others. Our representatives’ response? A completely meaningless and futile gesture. They quickly passed three new laws: (1) gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are now illegal, (2) raised the age at which a citizen can buy guns to 21, and (3) banning the open carry of loaded shotguns and rifles in public. Governor Dan McKee signed those three bills into law on Tuesday, saying, “ . . .these measures can help save lives.” Really?

NONE of these laws would prevent a mass shooting in any conceivable way. None would have prevented what happened in Uvalde.

This nation doesn’t have a gun problem; it has a crime problem. It’s a people problem. When will we require our justice system to enforce our laws and remove criminals from society? When will we finally elect legislators who are interested in solving problems instead of self-serving posturing?

Once again, American legislators have acted in direct defiance of the Constitution of the United States of America. They have acted to infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens.

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
