RIGOP Condemns Providence Democrats’ Broken Moral Compass Over Removal of Mural Honoring Murdered Ukrainian Refugee Iryna Zarutska

The Rhode Island Republican Party today denounced Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, State Rep. David Morales, and their Democrat allies for demanding the removal of a privately funded mural honoring Iryna Zarutska, the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee brutally murdered last summer. Their actions reveal a disturbing willingness to erase the memory of a tragic victim rather than confront the failures of soft-on-crime policies that enabled her killer. In a shocking display of misplaced priorities, Mayor Smiley labeled the mural “divisive” and “misguided,” claiming it “does not represent Providence.” Socialist mayoral candidate and State Representative David Morales went further, declaring that the mural “does not reflect Providence’s values” and would make residents “feel less safe.”

“Honoring the memory of an innocent young woman who was stabbed to death by a repeat offender somehow violates ‘Providence values’? This is moral bankruptcy,” said RIGOP Chairman Allyn Meyers. “Iryna Zarutska’s murder was preventable. Her alleged killer had a lengthy record of lower-level charges that resulted in little to no jail time. Instead of facing this reality and fighting for tougher accountability, Mayor Smiley and Rep. Morales want to whitewash her story from public view. Their moral compass is completely broken.”

The controversy erupted after the mural became part of a national effort to highlight the human cost of lenient criminal justice policies. Zarutska’s killing drew the nation’s attention due to the suspect’s prior arrests and failures in the system, issues Rhode Island Democrats have repeatedly downplayed through soft on crime policies over public safety. Republicans stand with the vast majority of Rhode Islanders who believe victims deserve remembrance and repeat offenders deserve consequences. Erasing Iryna’s face from a Providence wall does not make anyone safer; it only protects failed progressive ideology from scrutiny.

“The Democrat leadership in Providence would rather tear down a memorial to a murdered immigrant than admit their policies endanger law-abiding citizens,” the Chairman continued. “This isn’t compassion. It’s cowardice. Rhode Island families deserve leaders who put public safety first, not politicians more concerned with political optics than preventing the next tragedy.” The RIGOP calls on all Rhode Islanders to reject this shameful erasure and demand accountability from officials who value ideology over innocent lives.

Chairman Allyn Meyers Comments on Developments in Iran and the Middle East

WARWICK, RI – Republican Party of Rhode Island Chairman Allyn Meyers released the following statement on developments in Iran and the Middle East:

“Today, President Trump has defeated one of the greatest embodiments of evil in the world, Ayatollah Khamenei, who persecuted his own people and was responsible for some of the most heinous acts of terror in the Middle East,” said Chairman Meyers.

“Since 1979, Persian Americans in Rhode Island, and Persians all over the world, have carried the memory of the Lion and the Sun, a symbol of their brave resistance, awaiting its return over a free Iran. Now that the Islamic Republic is collapsing, and Ali Khamenei has been terminated, that memory is in reach for the first time in 47 years, as the people of Iran can begin to chart their own destiny,” said Chairman Meyers.

“Thanks to President Trump and our nation’s greatest and most steadfast ally, Israel, the patriots of Iran have the single-greatest chance to take back their country and help the United States restore peace throughout the Middle East and the world. May God protect the brave American servicemen and women who put their lives on the line in today’s special military operation to keep our country safe,” Chairman Meyers concluded.

From the Ocean State Current: Portsmouth Fights Back: Local Control Under Attack

Wednesday, February 25th, 2026

RhodeMapRI is back and this time, Portsmouth isn’t taking it. The town unanimously passed a resolution defending local control over zoning and land use, and now the question on everyone’s mind is whether a lawsuit against the state is next.

On #InTheDugout with Mike Stenhouse, Sten sits down with Larry Fitzmorris of Portsmouth Concerned Citizens, Town Council Vice President Dave Gleason, and attorney Giovanni Cicione to break down what’s really at stake.

Portsmouth’s Town Council voted unanimously to push back against 2025 state housing laws that critics say steamroll local planning, ignore infrastructure realities, and override the constitutional home rule authority Rhode Island municipalities have long relied on. The resolution doesn’t just protest, it calls for coordinated action among RI cities and towns, including possible judicial review and injunctions against the most overreaching provisions. When a town council that spans Republicans, Democrats, and Independents agrees on something this unanimously, Rhode Islanders should pay attention.

Sten asks the guests on where the RI League of Cities and Towns stands, whether Portsmouth’s General Assembly delegation is actually fighting for their constituents, and whether House Speaker Shekarchi has a conflict of interest in how this legislation took shape.

This is the conversation state leaders don’t want happening and it’s happening right now. Tune in!

Statement from Rhode Island Republican Party on Tragic Pawtucket Shooting

WARWICK, RI – Republican Party of Rhode Island Chairman Allyn Meyers released the following statement on the tragic shooting in Pawtucket on Monday:

“Rhode Island is devastated by the senseless act of violence that occurred on Monday in Pawtucket. A celebration of high school boys on their senior day from several area high schools was forever marred by this tragedy.”

“Our hearts are with the victims, parents, family members, teachers, and everyone impacted by this incident. We are deeply grateful to the first responders who acted swiftly to provide aid to the injured, secure the scene, and continue their investigation. The entire Republican Party of Rhode Island is united in prayer for healing and strength for all affected.”

“Rhode Island, like much of the country, is confronting a profound mental health and crisis. Families are bearing the weight of that crisis at a scale we can no longer dismiss as incidental. That weight now hits closer to home than ever before.”

“As we move forward, we must look at all root causes of this act of violence and not shy away from discussions and serious policy decisions about mental health, treatment, and the wider impact on the community. There is no one-fix solution, but an honest evaluation of harmful policies is much-needed to stem any future violent acts from harming Rhode Islanders.”

Meyers: Three Years After Washington Bridge Closure, No One Held Accountable

WARWICK, RI – Today, Republican Party of Rhode Island Chairman Allyn Meyers released the following statement following the announcement of Peter Alviti’s departure as Director of RIDOT:

“Just over three years after the public learned of the closing of the Washington Bridge, and following Governor McKee’s subsequent promise of a “day of reckoning,” Rhode Island taxpayers have yet to see anyone held accountable for the failure to maintain the primary crossing point between the two ends of the state,” said Chairman Allyn Meyers.

“With today’s announcement of RIDOT Director Peter Alviti’s “retirement,” Rhode Islanders are reminded that poor leadership at the highest levels allowed drivers to commute for months over a bridge that was critically unsafe for travel,” said Meyers. “Serious warnings were ignored, blame was shifted, businesses have been forced to close, and the taxpayers are left with a bill of more than $300 million.”

“When seeking information about this once-in-a-generation crisis, the public and media were met with deflection and obfuscation,” Meyers continued.

“Rhode Islanders deserve leaders who proactively solve problems before they become critical and are fully transparent when concerns arise,” Meyers said. “The Rhode Island Republican Party calls for a renewed, urgent focus on repairing and maintaining our state’s bridges and roads, and even more importantly, for its elected leaders to finally be held accountable for years of neglect and failure.”

“Our Party looks forward to the election and appointment of competent leaders who put politics aside and prioritize the well-being of Rhode Islanders first,” Meyers concluded.

Center Launches Petition Calling for Affordable Energy Policies

Make your voice heard with the Act On Climate Commission

Good day,

Today, I’m asking you to  help us win  an important energy policy battle.

Yesterday, our  RI Center for Freedom & Prosperity  launched an online petition drive calling for policymakers to support a fundamental pivot away from our state’s current energy strategy, which will lead to staggeringly high electricity prices and potentially dangerous blackouts.

Can we count on you to sign on? The petition can be accessed by clicking here.

The petition challenges the Senate Commission to Study the Implementation of (Rhode Island’s) Act On Climate mandates and to recommend a new energy strategy that prioritizes securing affordable and abundant energy for the people of Rhode Island instead of seeking-out unreliable and costly green energy sources … in desperate hope of meeting our state’s arbitrary and unachievable ‘net zero’ emissions goals.

And it’s working! Our petition already has over 250 signatures … and since I went on the radio for a full hour on WPRO yesterday, the Chairman of the Senate Commission has  personally invited me  to testify in front of his commission next week.

As public outcry about the high costs and risks associated with existing green energy policies continues to grow, many other northeast states have either modified – or signaled their intent to modify – their unsustainable policies, this petition gives voice to Ocean State residents who are concerned that they and our state will suffer future ‘energy poverty’.

Each petition submitted will automatically send an email to all Commission members and to other key legislative leaders and will include optional personal comments from each petitioner.

Samples of personal commentary from submitted petitioners – like you – can be viewed on The Ocean State Current including:

  • “My energy bills are outrageous!”
  • “Repeal the Act on Climate. It is destructive to impose this expensive, job killing, budget burden on Rhode Island families”
  • “All of the green energy policies that have been passed by this administration are bankrupting Rhode Islanders.  Let’s put RI families FIRST!!”
  • “Rhode islanders will not survive with current climate goals set. Stop offshore wind and cutting down trees for solar farms.”

Please make your voice heard by signing-on today! Thank you.
